B.Ed. JHS Education (Home Economics)

Home Economics education was introduced into the educational system to seek the welfare of the individual, families and communities. They facilitate the development of attributes for life long learning, for paid, unpaid and voluntary work. The content of Home Economics courses vary, but may include: food, nutrition and health; personal finance; family resource management and planning. Others are textiles and clothing, shelter and housing; consumerism and consumer science; household management, design and technology; food science and hospitality; human development and family studies; education and community services among others. The capacity to draw from such disciplinary diversity is the strength of the profession. This allows for the development of specific interpretations of the field as relevant to the context.

The courses have been put into three broad areas; Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles and Management in Living.
The programme is designed to enable student teachers develop their competencies and skills to address the concerns to enhance better living.

Career Opportunities:

Each of the subject matter areas in Home Economics has diverse possibilities for career development for both males and females. Some of the careers require further training.
These include: Teaching, Nutritionist, Caterer, Fashion designer, interior designer, clothing merchandiser, care of persons, care of house and child care development.
