PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ABURI HOSTS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH
24th November 2025
The Presbyterian Women’s College of Education (PWCE), Aburi, had the distinguished honour of hosting His Royal Highness Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, during an official visit to the College on Monday, 24th November 2025.

Welcoming the Duke, the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, highlighted the central role of early grade education in national development. He emphasised the importance of learning through play, noting that it fosters creativity, problem-solving, and confidence among young learners. Dr Apaak commended Sabre Education for its long-standing support to the Government of Ghana in delivering play-based teaching and learning programmes that are equipping teachers nationwide with innovative early childhood education skills.

The Principal of the College, Mrs Cynthia Anim, together with the Council Chairperson, Prof. Mrs Olivia Kwapong, led the Duke of Edinburgh and his delegation on a guided tour of the campus. They shared the rich history of PWCE, explaining that the College was established in 1858, and in 1925 hosted its first Early Childhood Education class introduced by C. P. Moir. They further noted that the College has remained a female institution since its inception and is now running accredited Degree programmes aligned with national standards for teacher education.

His Royal Highness also visited classrooms to interact with pupils benefiting from the College’s teaching practice programmes. He toured the Early Grade Education Resource Room, where officials of Sabre Education demonstrated how the centre supports practical, play-based methodologies for teacher trainees.

As part of the visit, the Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. The College, in turn, presented him with a beautifully crafted wooden carving as a token of appreciation. The Duke of Edinburgh was accompanied by officials from the British High Commission.

PWCE, Aburi expresses its profound gratitude for the honour of hosting His Royal Highness and remains committed to advancing excellence in Early Childhood and Teacher Education in Ghana.
