460 teacher trainees sacked from 46 colleges of Education nationwide

Some 460 first-year teacher trainees have been sacked from the 46 colleges of Education in the country. Starr News reports that the affected students are the first batch of trainees admitted in the 2018/19 academic year pursuing the four-year Bachelor of Education Programme. After a series of poor academic performances, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), which is the affiliating University of the various colleges, decided to dismiss the students. The report suggests some of the students have been hit very hard by the development, with some even attempting suicide. Others, according to the report, have also refused to go home as they fear being stigmatised and ridiculed. Meanwhile, some of the dismissed students have accused the National Conference of Principals of Teacher Training Colleges (PRINCOF) and Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) of contributing to their plight. According to them, they faced a lot of challenges during the first year of the course, pointing a situation where the Teachers of Colleges of Education went on strike for over a month. This, the aggrieved students said, made them skip some topics and forced them to complete a sixteen-week curriculum in twelve weeks. Meanwhile, attempts to get the side of TTAG are yet to gain any results.
